Monserrat, San Nicolás and the historic center
Your guide meets you within Buenos Aires city and accompanies you to the historic center. In Monserrat, Plaza de Mayo, the city’s first square, brings the Casa Rosada, Cabildo and Metropolitan Cathedral into view. Nearby are some of Buenos Aires’ oldest streets, laid out as part of the city’s 1580 grid. Your guide connects these places to stories of colonial rule, independence and modern politics. These buildings are normally viewed from outside; a Cathedral interior visit depends on opening and access.
Among Monserrat’s early landmarks are San Ignacio de Loyola, the city’s oldest surviving building and oldest church, and Librería de Ávila, its oldest bookstore and one of its longest-running businesses. At Farmacia La Estrella, Argentina’s oldest pharmacy, Hesperidina was created before becoming the country’s first registered trademark. These are stories and possible stops, not a promise of entry to each building.
Avenida de Mayo, the city’s first avenue, traces how the capital remade itself in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. In San Nicolás, the route may take in Avenida 9 de Julio, one of the widest avenues in the world. Your guide chooses the stops and order around your pickup point, time, access and interests. For independent planning, see our Buenos Aires city center guide.
Why choose this walk?
It suits visitors who want to understand the civic heart of Buenos Aires rather than simply photograph its landmarks. Your guide can spend more time on architecture, political history or everyday life in the center. The 3 hour format keeps the walk focused on this district. Want a longer private day covering La Boca and San Telmo as well as the historic center? See our 7 hour La Boca, San Telmo and City Center walk.
