Sugar and Spice Cookies
Guatemala 5415 (& Av. Juan B Justo), Palermo Hollywood

Out of the very few strict life rules that I subscribe to, the most important happens to be: “when in Buenos Aires, if a man gives you some delicious cookies for free, you must write about them on your blog”. My dear old grandmother used to say this when I was a child sat on her knee back in the mid-1980s. A magnificent woman, and clearly a technological visionary to boot. However, hard as she tried, she was unable to knock out of me this annoying tendency I have for making ridiculous things up.
And so, this post. Read on for more cookies and assorted photo silliness.
Sugar and Spice cookies: a great sweet snack in Buenos Aires
I have to say that [disclaimer aside: Frank gave me free cookies yesterday at the bloggers event held in his new Palermo Hollywood store/bakery, but these are still my honest opinions] Sugar and Spice makes some fantastically delicious cookies and cakes. I admit that I have been unable to try them all (annoyingly I am allergic to nuts, to go along with my fish / seafood allergy), but those that I did were all extremely tasty, and a perfect accompaniment to a cup of tea or coffee (anything but La Virginia, mind you).
Being a chocolate addict, my runaway Sugar and Spice favorites are their “passion for chocolate” cookies and “super chocolate” budin (cake), but I also really enjoyed the raisin and oatmeal cookies and, from their savory range of biscuits, the copetin fugazza (a biscuit flavored like fugazza, an Italian/Argentine pizza with no cheese or sauce - just the dough with onions, olive oil and oregano). Great stuff - thanks Frank!

Meeting other Buenos Aires bloggers
As ever, it was very nice to meet some other Buenos Aires bloggers at the event. And as bloggers have a habit of doing, most of them have already written about it: Nathan, Diva, Dalila and Marce, for starters. I had already met Nathan, Diva, and Frank himself, but it was great to see them again, and also meet all of Dalila, Marce, Tango Cherie and Stefan (of BA Insider magazine) for the very first time.
Personally, I would like to have more of these blogger events, because they make us feel loved and important. And if there is free food on offer, all the better. Invitations are welcome. Are you listening, all you Buenos Aires businesses out there, in need of good PR? ![]()

A MEETING OF MINDS SUCH AS BUENOS AIRES HAS NEVER WITNESSED
Much fun (and cookies) was had by all. But fret not, if you are in Buenos Aires and feeling left out of the cookie inner circle, you too can still be a part of it. Sugar and Spice biscuits and cookies are, I believe, available in the following fine Buenos Aires establishments (Frank, correct me if I’m wrong on any of these)…
Shops
- Sugar and Spice, Guatemala 5415, Palermo Hollywood
- Falabella (two outlets along Florida shopping street in the city center)
- Al queso, queso (outlets all over the city)
Cafes and Ice Cream Parlors (each with outlets all over the city)
- Aroma cafe
- McDonald’s McCafe
- The Coffee Store
- Freddo
- Munchis
Direct Orders: Sugar and Spice Contact details
- Telephone: 4777-5423 (from within Buenos Aires)
- Email: pedidos@sugarandspice.com.ar
- Website: www.sugarandspice.com.ar
Tell Frank that Alan sent you. Maybe I’ll get some more free cookies out of it ![]()

I find your article superlatively good but for months I have been telling people you sent me but with no results. Advice?
June 29th, 2007 at 10:00 pm
How would you know about the results? I’m the one sitting here amongst boxes of freebies thanks to your good work!
But did you really have to buy that many pairs of gaucho pants? Every fifth pair you buy off my referral I get sent a pair myself… I’m drowning in leather chaps here man!

You have a very good hability tyo divide all ypur posts in like 5 different ones, I like that. I think I´m going to copy you.
Hey, you are the king of marketing, why don´t you organize events for companies and you take us (bloggers) to all of them, why don´t you offer that service?
June 29th, 2007 at 10:38 pm
To tell you the truth, that is a fantastic idea Diva.
I would love to do that. The companies might not be interested in getting mentioned on one blog, but if they could get mentioned on many, they might well be.
First I’m going to call Alan Faena about getting us all rooms for a weekend in his hotel
After that, Sucre can invite us all to dinner…
June 29th, 2007 at 11:13 pm
Ha ha ha, Diva, I loved your idea! Alan, great post, as usual!
June 29th, 2007 at 11:18 pm
Thanks for dropping by Dalila
I’m actually serious about making Diva’s idea happen.
If I get time, I’ll try to organize an ‘alliance of Buenos Aires bloggers that love free things’.

Cool. You can say: “Oh, it’s actually really hard to get reviewed by us. It’s just your name is Alan too so I thought why not give Faena a try…”
The leather chaps must be from my unsuccessful attempt at shopping for a travesti outfit last halloween.

Alan,
Thanks for the mention and the link. I also think your grandmother was a visionary ahead of her time.
Your list of stores are correct but limited. There are many more but if someone wants to know where they could get them they could write in to us or call and tell us what barrio they are interested in and we can point them in the right direction. If they write to me I always respond with a discount coupon as well for our store.
Your idea is great and you can even use this as an example since just about all the bloggers that went wrote about it.
And that’s the way the cookie crumbles.
Saludos,
Frank

Hey Alan,
Count me in! I’m definitely a Buenos Aires Blogger Who Loves Free Things!
Anyway, it was such fun to meet you, and all the jolly others (was it all the sugar + caffeine? Worked for me!)
I’m looking forward to the Cookie and Wine event.
Anyway, maybe one time we can have a bloggers tango party in Boedo!
June 30th, 2007 at 3:51 pm
Nathan,
Looking forward to seeing your costume this halloween. With bells on.
Frank,
No worries, sorry if I wasn’t too in depth on your locations, but thought it would be nice to give people an idea of where to look out for your Cookies etc. Good job on the coupons for those that write to you!
I hope I do get time to organize some kind of bloggers alliance, and if I do, yes this is an excellent example to show companies
Cherie,
I’ll let you know when some more free things might be on offer… I’ll try to make something happen, sometime this year.
In fact, maybe I should go after a wine shop first to help us out for the cookie and wine tasting event?
Take care all,
Alan

Damn, wish we could’ve been there… We had a leaky radiator and the guy said he was coming at 10am to fix it. Of course, it’s Saturday now and he still hasn’t shown up!
Frank, we’re coming for those cookies soon…

Hey Will,
Shame you couldn’t make it, maybe the next one?
You will enjoy the cookies, I’m sure, they’re delicious. Although free things always seem to taste sweeter to me
Cheers,
Alan

MMMMM I LIKE ALL KINDS OF COOKIES ALAN. YOU SAY FREE ONES TASTE BETTER THAN OTHERS? I LIKE THEM NO MATTER HOW I GET THEM. I JUST HAVE TO GET THEM.
THAT SMILEY FACE LOOKS LIKE A COOKIE.
July 2nd, 2007 at 12:40 pm
I have to say COOKIE MONSTER, your comment was possibly my favorite comment ever on this blog.

July 2nd, 2007 at 9:36 pm
I know what you mean COOKIE MONSTER.
Cookies are so good, they could even help you to lose weight.
Not that I’m saying you’re in need of a diet, Mr Monster. I’m sure it’s just all the blue fur that makes you look that way…
