[...] So I learned a thing or two about Latin American negotiations whilst finding an apartment in Buenos Aires. In the United Kingdom and Australia (and no doubt the United States of America), as a tenant you get used to being at the behest of real estate agents with no room for negotiation and utter compliance with whatever the real estate agent tells you to do. Rules and regulations dominate every potential or actual transaction. [...]

Hi Fernando,

Thanks for your views. For the record, this post was me putting a friend's apartment that is for rent on my blog as a favour, not an advert. But you can call it an advert if you like.

I agree completely about foreigners being taken advantage of because they are perceived as having more money than locals. It is a problem, and I would also recommend getting a local to help you out in your apartment search if you are a foreigner here (however, I would recommend NOT going to an inmobiliaria, but instead searching the classifieds for apartments that are being rented directly by the owners, as they are more likely to be open to negotiation over the lack of a garantia).

HOWEVER, it is sometimes impossible for foreigners to get an apartment at a fair price in Buenos Aires when they do not have a garantia. And when this is the case, they have to look at apartments "aimed at foreigners". And many people are happy to pay these prices because they are the only thing available, and still cheaper than staying in a hotel, guesthouse, or even a decent hostel.

For the record, I thought about not publishing your comment because it might detract from this post trying to help out my friend, but I don't like to censor comments if possible, so prefer to have an open debate.

Thanks,

Alan

I think it looks a bit on the expensive side. I suggest viewers (specially foreigners) to check the current rates at a real state agent (inmobiliaria) before checking these ads which target foreigners.

Also it would be good if you make friends with a local and then make HIM/HER go to an inmobiliaria.

I think it's a bit unfair when foreigners are taken advantage of because they are perceived as 'having more money' than locals.

Foreigners which validate high rent prices in turn contribute to the upwards pricing spiral which makes life difficult for locals who have to rent.

Just my two cents...

Hi Giles,

I've passed your info on to the owner again - but as I said, he is out of the country on business at the moment. I am sure he will get back to you soon.

Thanks,

Alan
